What does the Connection organisation property mean?

The Connection organisation property (connection_organisation) shows the company or organization that visitors browse your site from. For example, a visit from an employee's office computer can show the employer's name.

Piano Analytics gets this information from the visitor's IP address. It sends the IP address to its partner Digital Element, which returns the organization linked to that address, if one is known.

Organisation and ISP

Organisation values can also be internet service providers (ISPs) or hosting providers. These are also available in the ISP property (connection_isp).

Property

What it shows

Connection organisation (connection_organisation)

The entity that publicly owns the IP address.

ISP (connection_isp)

The internet service provider of the visitor making the visit.

For example, a visit from a university's network can show the university as the organisation, while a visit from home shows the visitor's internet provider.

Usage

  • Understand unexpected traffic: if geolocation shows traffic from a place you don't expect, break it down by Connection organisation to see which networks it comes from.

  • Exclude internal traffic: you can use the organisation to filter out visits from your own company.

A VPN or similar security tool changes the public IP address, so the organisation shown is the one that owns the VPN, not the visitor's real one. Organisations are also only shown when Digital Element has one linked to the IP address, so some visits have no value.
