Where do the values of a custom property come from?

A custom property is created by a user in your organization, not by Piano. Its values depend on how your organization set it up, so the people who manage your Piano Analytics setup are the best ones to explain them.

A custom property can get its values in three ways:

  • Tagging: your site or app sends the values in its tracking events. They're whatever your implementation sends, for example an internal content ID or a category code.

  • A Data Management rule: a rule in your Data Model calculates or transforms the values, for example by copying or replacing values from another property.

  • An enrichment option: values are added after collection. See Catalogs.

Property's description

Before you contact anyone, look at the property's description. It often explains what the values mean:

  • In Data Query, hover over the property to see its description.

  • In Data Management > Data Model > Properties, open the property to see its description and how its values are processed.

If the description doesn't answer your question, contact an administrator in your organization. They can tell you who created the property and how it's filled.
