User Interest Segments

The User Interest segment category in Piano utilizes Machine Learning to generate audience segments based on the types of content users engage with. These segments help in grouping users according to their preferred reading material, as well as their consumption behavior in comparison to others who read similar content. This feature uses standardized categories from the industry taxonomy provided by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).

Key Features

1. Dynamic Audience Segmentation

Automatic Tuning

The platform auto-adjusts the audience inclusion threshold in real time to account for changes in reading patterns caused by emerging topics and new articles. This ensures the segments remain relevant and accurate over time.

Dynamic interests

The platform dynamically selects the segments to create by analyzing the content published and generating the segments that are more relevant for each site audience and content.

Adjustable Threshold

If you find that your user interest segments are too broad or include too many users, you can request Piano to lower the maximum threshold. Note that this adjustment will affect all user interest segments and individual segment adjustments are not supported.

2. Data-Driven Methodology

Relative Frequency Calculation

The system calculates the relative frequency of page views a reader has in each interest area. For example, if a reader has 10 page views where 8 are in Sports and 2 are in Politics, the relative frequency is 80% for Sports and 20% for Politics. This calculation is performed in real time for all active readers in the audience who meet the inclusion criteria.

Inclusion Criteria

To avoid inflating interest segments with transient, low-engagement users, each reader must have at least three page views on two different days within the last month to be included.

Ranking Mechanism

Readers are ranked based on their relative frequency within each content category. The top-ranked readers are the ones who have shown the highest interest in that category and the ones selected to be segment members.

3. Interest Areas

Piano uses the IAB content classification taxonomy to define specific interest areas. This ensures standardization and facilitates easy mapping to industry-recognized categories. The categories currently supported by Piano can be found here
