Why You Can't Remove a Payment Method from an Active Subscription
This restriction applies broadly:
-
Even if the subscription is paid in full
-
Even if auto-renewal is turned off
-
Even if renewal is set to "manual"
-
To end users and administrators (in standard workflows)
What You Can Do Instead
Option 1: Replace the Card (Recommended for Active Subscriptions)
If the subscription must remain active but you need to remove the existing card, the supported approach is to add a new payment method and set it as the default/primary. Once the subscription is linked to the new payment method, you can typically remove the old one.
-
Add a new credit card to the user's account (their "Wallet" / saved payment methods).
-
Update the subscription so the renewal/default payment method is the new card.
-
After the new card is in use, delete the old card from the Wallet if it is no longer linked to any active subscription.
Option 2: Cancel the Subscription, Then Remove the Card
If the goal is to remove the payment method entirely and you do not need the subscription to stay active, you must first ensure there is no active subscription associated with that payment method.
-
Cancel the subscription associated with the card.
-
After the subscription is no longer active / no longer linked to the payment method, remove the card from the Wallet.
Option 3: Wait for the Term to End (If Renewal Is Already Off)
If auto-renewal has already been disabled, the subscription may remain active until the end of the current paid term. In that case:
-
You generally must wait until the subscription expires before the card can be removed (unless you replace the card as in Option 1).
Troubleshooting and Common Questions
"Auto-Renew Is Off — Why Can't I Remove the Card?"
Turning off auto-renew stops future renewals, but the subscription may still be active for the remainder of its current term. Piano still prevents removing the payment method while the subscription is active.
"Can Support Remove the Card Anyway?"
In some cases, removing or replacing payment details for an active subscription may require assistance beyond what's available in the standard UI. If you cannot complete the replacement workflow above, contact Piano Support with the subscriber details and the specific request.
Summary
-
You cannot remove a credit card/payment method that is linked to an active subscription.
-
To remove a card while keeping the subscription active, replace it by adding a new card and setting it as the subscription's default payment method.
-
To fully remove the card, the subscription must be canceled or expired, after which the payment method can be deleted.
