If you're planning to change your website's domain (e.g. from website.com to websitename.org), there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure a smooth transition.
It's crucial to update all the links on your site to reflect the new domain. This includes not only internal links but also any external links pointing to your site.
It's also important to be aware that changing your domain will likely cause cookies to be reset, resulting in a loss of data on user behavior. This can impact your ability to track user engagement, target advertising campaigns, and personalize content for returning visitors. All users will be logged out, and Pageview meters and any running AB Tests will be reset.
When it comes to your Piano setup, we recommend reviewing any setting related to functionality or feature where URLs are included. Please see the possible problematic spots below:
-
Edit Business URLs - In the Edit Business section, clients should update the URL (Website URL for Email Manager notifications and templates, and Landing Page URL for Site Licenses) after the change.
-
Edit Business → User provider - If you are using Identity Management, you should update the Reset password landing URL after the switch. You should also add the new URL to the Authorized tab's JavaScript Origins and Redirect URIs.
-
Composer's Effective pages - Clients should review if any Experience's Pages cards contain absolute/full URLs. If you only use tags, sections, or parts of the URL (e.g. /members, /articles, etc.) for targeting, you should be fine (if the new site has the same structure).
-
Resource URLs - Clients should update resource URLs for informative purposes, but this won't affect any end-user-related functionality.
-
Terms redeem URLs (for Gift, Shared terms, etc.) - Clients should update terms that have shared tokens (for shared subscriptions) enabled and gifts. New terms might need to be created since it's not possible to edit these settings for terms that already have conversions.
-
Templates - You should check your templates for any links to the old URL and prepare new versions of the templates with the new URL, which can then be activated once the domain switch is complete.
-
Email Manager - Clients should check active email notifications for the old URL and update the URL under Edit Business if they use any variable for the business URL (i.e.
{{business_url}}). -
Webhook endpoint - Clients need to create/prepare a new endpoint on their new domain and replace the existing URL in the Piano dashboard under Manage → Webooks.
-
Composer 1x - Please reach out to our Support Team at support@piano.io after the domain switch, so a re-crawl of the articles can be initiated and the new domain configured.
Please keep in mind that this list might not be exhaustive depending on how you use the Piano platform.
